Mobile valet vs hand car wash: which is better?
Both clean your car. Both use water and elbow grease. So why does a mobile valet cost twice as much as a £20 hand car wash? Here's the honest comparison — pros, cons, and when each makes sense.
The TL;DR
- Hand car wash is faster and cheaper, but uses the same dirty mitt on every car. Fine for old runabouts. Risky for cars with paint you care about.
- Mobile valet is more expensive but uses fresh products on every car, comes to you, and uses techniques designed to protect paint. Better for higher-value cars or when convenience matters.
The price difference (and why)
A hand car wash in London is typically £15-£25. A mobile valet starts at £60. That's a 3-4x difference, which seems huge — until you understand what you're actually paying for.
The hand car wash spends maybe 15 minutes on your car. They use the same wash mitt and same buckets across 30+ cars in a day. They use cheap, harsh chemicals that strip wax and sealants. They use a pressure washer to dry the car (which spreads water everywhere and pushes dirt into seals).
A mobile valet spends 75-90 minutes on a single car. We use fresh products and clean buckets every time. We use a two-bucket method that prevents your dirt from re-contaminating the rinse water. We dry with clean microfibre towels. Different game entirely.
Where the hand car wash falls short
Swirl marks
The single biggest issue with hand car washes is the wash mitt. They don't change it between cars. So whatever sand, grit, or particle was on the last car is now being dragged across your paint. Result: those circular fine scratches you can see when sunlight hits the bonnet at an angle.
Once swirl marks are in your paint, the only fix is paint correction — typically £350+. So that £20 wash can cost you £350 in correction work to undo.
Cheap chemicals
Hand car washes often use traffic film remover (TFR) at concentrations way higher than recommended. TFR strips wax, sealants, and even fades plastic trim over time. Your car looks clean today, but you've reset any protection you had.
You drive there
If you're in central or inner London, driving 20 minutes to a hand car wash, queueing for 20 minutes, and driving 20 minutes back is an hour you've spent. Multiply by petrol or congestion charge. The "saving" gets eaten up.
Where the mobile valet wins
It comes to you
Most mobile valet companies (us included) come to your driveway, kerbside parking, office car park, or wherever your car is parked. You don't move. You don't queue. You don't even need to be there — we WhatsApp you when we're done.
Paint safety
The two-bucket method, snow foam pre-wash, lambswool mitts, and microfibre drying towels are all standard for mobile valeting. Each technique is designed to protect paint from contact damage. None of it is standard at most hand car washes.
Better products
We use pH-neutral shampoos, professional-grade snow foam, hydrophobic sealants, and proper interior cleaners. The marginal cost of decent products is small but the result is much better — and lasts longer.
Where the hand car wash makes sense
Honestly, there are situations where a hand car wash is the right call:
- You drive an old beater that's already battered. No point spending £60 on a 15-year-old car with existing paint damage.
- You need it cleaned NOW and there's a hand car wash on your route home.
- Budget is tight and the car needs a basic clean. A weekly £20 hand wash beats no wash at all.
When the mobile valet is the right call
- You drive a car you care about (most cars over £15k retail).
- The car has a ceramic coating or sealant you want to preserve.
- You don't have time to drive across town to a hand wash.
- The interior needs proper attention, not just a quick vacuum.
- You want consistent quality every time, not whoever's working the bay today.
"Used hand car washes for years until I noticed swirl marks all over my Range Rover. Switched to JMC for monthly Wash & Protect — totally different finish."
The middle ground
You don't have to commit to one or the other. Many of our regulars do:
- A quick hand wash mid-month for a low-cost top-up
- A mobile Wash & Protect monthly to maintain proper protection
- A Full Clean quarterly for deep interior work
That keeps the car looking sharp for less than £50/month total — without the swirl mark accumulation.
Our honest recommendation
If your car cost more than £15k and you intend to keep it for more than a year, mobile valeting is genuinely worth it. If it's a runabout you're going to scrap in 18 months, save the money and use the hand wash. The economics depend on what you're trying to protect.
