Ceramic coating vs sealant: what's the difference?
Both make your car shinier. Both make water bead off the paint. But the price difference is huge — £80 to £800 — and the lifespan ranges from 8 weeks to 5 years. Here's how to know which one your car actually needs.
What they actually do
Both ceramic coatings and sealants do the same fundamental job: they create a hydrophobic layer on top of your car's clear coat. Water rolls off in beads, dirt has trouble bonding to the surface, and the paint stays cleaner for longer between washes.
The difference is how long the layer lasts and how hard it is to remove.
Sealant — quick, affordable, temporary
A sealant is a synthetic polymer that bonds to your paint. It's applied during a wash (no curing time needed) and creates a hydrophobic surface immediately.
Pros
- Cheap — typically £50-£100 added to a regular wash. Our Wash & Protect is £85 including the wash itself.
- Fast — applied during the wash, no extra time needed.
- No prep required — works on any cleanly washed paint.
- Easy to refresh — just book another wash with sealant.
Cons
- Short-lived — typically 8 to 12 weeks of effective protection.
- Wears off in stages — you'll notice water bead less and less over time.
- Less hard than ceramic — doesn't add scratch resistance.
Best for
Most regular drivers. If you want your car to look better, stay cleaner, and feel more luxurious between washes — but you don't want to drop £500+ — sealant is the right call. We use Gyeon Wet Coat which is a professional-grade product.
Ceramic coating — proper, expensive, long-lasting
A ceramic coating is a glass-like layer applied to clean, decontaminated paint. It chemically bonds with the clear coat and forms a much harder, more durable surface than any sealant.
Pros
- Lasts 1-5 years depending on the product (entry-level: 1-2 years, professional: 3-5 years).
- Adds genuine scratch resistance — won't prevent stone chips, but reduces wash-induced swirl marks dramatically.
- Easier to clean — even more hydrophobic than sealants. Many ceramic-coated cars rinse clean with just water.
- Better gloss — a properly applied ceramic coating adds visible depth and shine to paint.
- UV protection — slows oxidation, especially relevant on darker colours.
Cons
- Expensive — proper professional ceramic coating is £400-£800+.
- Requires proper prep — ideally the car needs a full paint correction before coating, or you're locking in any swirl marks under the coating. Realistically you're looking at £600-£1200 total when prep is included.
- Curing time — needs 24-48 hours of dry weather while it cures. Can't be applied in the rain.
- Hard to remove — ceramic coatings are difficult to undo without machine polishing.
Best for
Cars worth £40k+ where you want to preserve resale value, or daily drivers in harsh conditions where you want maximum protection. Also great for new cars where you want to lock in the showroom finish.
The honest comparison
| Factor | Sealant | Ceramic |
|---|---|---|
| Price | £50-£100 | £400-£800 |
| Lifespan | 8-12 weeks | 1-5 years |
| Application time | During wash | 1-2 days |
| Hydrophobic | Yes | Yes (more) |
| Scratch resistance | No | Some |
| Annual cost | ~£300-£500 (4-6 applications) | ~£200-£400 (amortised) |
Which should you choose?
Choose a sealant if:
- You wash the car regularly (every 2-4 weeks)
- You don't want a big upfront cost
- You want flexibility (different products, easy to refresh)
- The car is worth less than £30k or you don't plan to keep it long
Choose ceramic coating if:
- The car is worth £40k+ or you've just bought it new
- You want to preserve resale value
- You're prepared for upfront prep cost
- You drive a darker colour where swirl marks are most visible
Our take
For most London drivers, a regular sealant beats an aged ceramic coating. A well-maintained car with monthly Wash & Protect looks better than a ceramic-coated car that's never washed properly.
If you do go for ceramic, do it right — get the paint corrected first, otherwise you're locking in swirl marks for years. Send us a photo on WhatsApp if you want our honest opinion on whether your car needs ceramic or just a good sealant routine.
